What is A Concussion?
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when a blow, jolt, or bump to the head—or a hit to the body that causes the head to move rapidly—disrupts normal brain function.
Symptoms Can Vary
Concussion symptoms are not always obvious and may appear hours—or even days—after an injury. They can last for a short period or persist for weeks, and each person’s experience is different.
A Functional Injury
Unlike fractures or bleeding in the brain, a concussion is considered a functional injury, which disrupts how the brain works rather than causing a visible structural problem. This is why standard imaging tests such as CT scans or MRIs are used to rule out more serious conditions, but not to diagnose a concussion itself.
ImPACT Concussion Testing
At T.E.A.M., we use FDA-cleared ImPACT Concussion Testing as a valuable tool to support our providers in making accurate diagnoses. ImPACT is a computerized test that objectively measures memory, attention span, and problem-solving skills—helping healthcare professionals make informed decisions about treatment and safe return to activity.
